XFL’s Reopening – Impact on Cleveland Sports?

Former WWE superstar Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and RedBird Capital are buying the XFL league for 15 million dollars. It consists of eight teams and is having its inaugural season here in 2020. The league paused after five games because of Covid-19 earlier this calendar year.

The XFL did have to file for bankruptcy and this purchase certainly saved it from extinction.

A big focus is on speeding up the game, but the XFL is still football. It is true that the NFL does have a lot of pausing in it for huddles, penalty announcements, timeouts, amongst other occurrences that happen frequently. Now that it officially is going to remain a league thanks to ‘The Rock’ amongst other partners, moving forward, it will be interesting to see what other adjustments this group makes to the game.

Who are the players to look for?

A big name to watch is Cardale Jones. The former Ohio State quarterback that actually led the team to a national championship is now playing for the DC Defenders. Another name such as wide receiver Landry Jones is on the Dallas Renegades. Former Browns wide receiver Antonio Callaway is on the Tampa Bay Vipers.

Thus, there are certainly some talented players that are within this league that just got a new lease on life.

Here is a full list of the team names divided into two conferences of four:

  • St. Louis BattleHawks
  • Tampa Bay Vipers
  • New York Guardians
  • Dallas Renegades
  • Houston Roughnecks
  • Los Angeles Wildcats
  • Seattle Dragons
  • D.C. Defenders

The XFL will also serve as a platform for players to display their abilities and NFL organizations to see that and end up signing them to contracts. Additionally, it serves as another place for Americans to get entertainment from a pastime.

How does this affect Cleveland?

Well, the Browns may take a look at some of the players that end up competing for the XFL that would’ve been unemployed before this revitalization. Eventually, it is possible the team does sign a couple of players from the league.

Could Cleveland ever have an XFL team of its own?

While it is unlikely, there is always a chance. This city suffers enough with the Browns losing and doesn’t need to deal with another. The Cleveland Gladiators did compete in the Arena Football League in years past. However, that type of football is a much different style.

Overall, no one quite knows what the future holds with the way this Covid-19 virus continues to plague our society. A lot of the success of this league will have to do with how Covid is tamed and if all of the games are able to be played. Right now, there are matchups that were canceled in the MLB due to the virus and its infected players. If that happens to the XFL, it will not be good for those that put a lot of money in this league.

However, at least there is a chance for the XFL to have success as a league thanks to ‘The Rock’ and others that bought in. Everyone involved must make the most of the opportunity. Who knows, players may be wearing browns and orange one day because of this opportunity.
