Wrap Up – April 2nd Double Header

Game 1:

Game one of the Cleveland Indians and Oakland A’s double header featured former Indians pitcher, left hander Scott Kazmir on the mound for the A’s. The Tribe retaliated with right hander Corey Kluber. Last season, he went 11-5 with a 3.85 ERA in 24 starts.

As we watched Kluber scuffle for an uncomfortable 3.1 innings, Kazmir was magical. He only allowed three hits in 7.1 innings, putting away five batters via the strike out.

A run in the first, two runs in the second and another two runs in the third gave the A’s the early command. They never looked back. It was A’s RBI singles from Yoenis Céspedes in the first, and Jed Lowrie in the second that hurt. However, the dagger came in the third on an Alberto Callaspo two run bomb to right.

The Tribe scored one run in the 9th on a Carlos Santana RBI single to center. 6-1 A’s, the final in game 1.

Game 2:

The Tribe sent out Zach McAllister to square off against Josh Lindblom.

The A’s jumped on McAllister scoring two early runs in the first inning. However, it was utility man Mike Aviles that came through for the Tribe in the 4th inning with a two run, line-drive home run just over the wall in left. The A’s would jump right back in front in the bottom half of that same very inning. They carried a 4-3 lead all the way to the 9th inning.

The Indians came out swinging in the top half of the 9th inning. A Ryan Raburn single, followed by a Nick Swisher single to center got the ball rolling. Jason Kipnis grounded into a fielders choice, but quickly stole second base. Third basemen Carlos Santana was walked to load the bases. It was Michael Brantley who came through with a two run single to right field giving the Indians a 5-4 lead. That was pushed out to 6-4.

Closer John Axford nailed the door down for his second save in an Indians uniform.

The Indians win the series by splitting the double header, and head home to Cleveland with a 2-1 record for the home opener on Friday.
