As of Monday, 2/27/17, the Cleveland Browns have released WR Andrew Hawkins. Hawkins was signed in 2014 as a restricted free agent for the Cincinnati Bengals. Over the past three seasons, Hawkins has accumulated a total of 1,424 yards and five touchdowns. Last season, Hawk played in all 16 games and was second on the team with three TD catches. He is turning 31 next month and the Browns are continuing to look to get younger, while also saving $1.8 million in cap room. The Browns had drafted four receivers in last year’s draft, so it was only a matter of time before Hawkins was going to be released.

The Browns released a statement on the situation and head coach Hue Jackson stated, “It’s tough to say goodbye to men like Hawk, that have done everything you’ve asked of them and gone above and beyond when it comes to leadership.” With such a young group last season, Hawk was one of the few vets on the team and Hue said throughout the season that he was a rock in the locker room.

Hawk was nothing but a professional his entire career, but especially with the Browns. He never complained about touches, never complained about the losing culture the Browns have. On a video on Uninterrupted, Hawk said that it was a mutual decision and the best decision for both parties. He thanked Browns fans for their continuous support throughout his years in Cleveland. He highly praised Hue Jackson, stating, “Hue Jackson is one of the best coaches in football.” “Andrew Hawkins was a great asset to the organization in his three seasons with our team” Executive VP Sashi Brown stated on the release of Hawkins. “One of my favorite memories of Hawk was the catch he made in the final seconds of the 2014 home opener against the Saints that set up the game winning field goal.”

Hawk will be missed as a part of the team moving forward but assured that Hue is changing the culture of Cleveland Browns football. Everyone will miss his ability to be a professional on and off the field. So, from all Browns fans, thank you ,Hawk, for a great three seasons with the Browns and best of luck wherever you play next.
