Cleveland is a Browns town.
For the last 20 years, it has been somewhat of a joke. Recently, with the drafting of QB Baker Mayfield and the trading for star WR Odell Beckham Jr. from the New York Giants – that has changed. The Browns are now a favorite to win the AFC North and some may dare to say they could contend for a Super Bowl.
Now, we are all eternally grateful for 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers’ Championship, spearheaded by LeBron James. The first championship in this city since 1964. It was an incredible comeback, amazing finish and beating the Warriors was awesome and euphoric.
But LeBron left again.
You can make whatever excuse you want, but the facts are the facts.
Seeing LeBron in the Lakers jersey is just weird. The fact that the Lakers are 31-40 and not going to make the playoffs is even weirder. I think it leaves a stain on his legacy, not a big one, but it’s there.
LeBron left in 2010 and was the most hated man alive. When he came back, at least I thought it was to finish his career. Guess not…
Last April, the Browns draft Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield with the first overall pick. This guy has the most infectious personality and, oh, he can actually play quarterback. That’s something Clevelanders are unfamiliar with…unless our team is on defense.
Now, the Browns pulled a “LeBron” and didn’t make the playoffs this past year. (Bad joke) However, trading for Beckham and a number of other players makes them poised to get there for the first time since the 2002 season.
I believe that if Baker makes the playoffs, he jumps LeBron. He wins a Super Bowl and I will build the statue myself.
LeBron has soured on me, as you can tell. It’s not a 2010 hatred at all. It’s just kind of like “bleh.”
The NFL dominates the NBA and that coveted Super Bowl title will put Baker Mayfield as Cleveland’s favorite son. He will be loved forever and ever in a similar way to how Bernie Kosar is currently.
Now, there is still a TON of work to be done. I do not want to jump the gun here. He has to earn it, just like of all of the greats do. I am excited to see it unfold and I cannot wait for this upcoming season to begin.
Oh, and LeBron, do you want your drink while watching the first round on the rocks?
