It’s a sour ending to a successful season for the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Buckeyes had to deal with many questions and doubts about their team from the beginning of the season, especially surrounding the quarterback position. Kyle McCord proved that he can play. He just needed the opportunity to showcase himself. The offense and defense were still intact, but they needed to get over the hump by beating teams like Michigan and other elite teams to be the talk of the town. Ever since Ohio State lost to Michigan, it has been gloomy in Ohio. Where does Ohio State go from here? Who will be the starting quarterback next year?
First of all, it’s inexcusable for Ohio State to lose 14-3 to No. 9 Missouri (11-2) in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic last Friday. Their defense was outstanding and had a chance to shut them out, but that fourth quarter was atrocious. Also, you had no QB Kyle McCord and no WR Marvin Harrison Jr.
McCord decided to enter the transfer portal and is now committed to Syracuse. It’s understandable. McCord has connections. He went 11-1 as a starting quarterback and finished this season with 24 touchdown passes and six interceptions while completing 65.8% of his passes. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr is preparing for the draft. He’s been sensational throughout his career with the Buckeyes. He earned unanimous first-team All-America honors in 2022 and 2023, combining for 2,474 yards and 28 touchdowns on 144 receptions.
However, I feel that both men should’ve played at least one more time to end their season or time at Ohio State on a high note. It’s a shame that Ohio State was missing key guys in this game against Missouri. They were shorthanded. It wasn’t a fair fight. But it is what it is. What’s done is done.
In terms of the 2024 season, the upside is that Ohio State has 20 student-athletes who signed national letters of intent. Six of those prospects are top-100-rated players. So we will have to see what they can bring to the table. The quarterback position is a major concern. We’re not sure who can fill the shoes of C.J. Stroud or any of his predecessors that came before him. When you have the starting quarterback position at Ohio State, it’s a very big deal. There are severe high expectations that need to be met. Ohio State program is in it to win it NOW.
Ohio State are seeking to win their first national title since 2014, which is the first year of the College Football Playoffs.
