Plenty has been discussed about the whole Deshaun Watson trade and sign with Cleveland. What would general manager Andrew Berry do with Baker Mayfield? Many speculated that it would be days or possibly hours before Baker Mayfield would be out of Cleveland. Teams that were potential suitors for Mayfield were the Carolina Panthers and the Seattle Seahawks. Carolina took their names out of the Baker sweepstakes a few days later. Some people have given up on Baker Mayfield, though I think it is too early to draw that conclusion.
As each day passes, it seems less likely that Baker will be traded, given the unknown outcome in the Deshaun Watson lawsuits. In early March, two grand juries declined to indict Deshaun Watson on 10 criminal accusations. Currently, Watson’s attorney has 17 depositions to complete with Watson and two of the depositions are taking place today in Houston. The only answer left unknown is how many games Deshaun Watson will be suspended? Remember, Roger Goddell suspended Ben Roethlisberger for four games after he was accused by one woman.

The Browns organization realizes Watson will be suspended. This is why his base salary will be over one million dollars. The Browns need a reliable quarterback to step in, which means holding on to Mayfield is the best option compared to Jacoby Brissett. It is possible that Andrew Berry is not happy with the offers or lack of offers he has received for Baker. If they play Baker and he does well, maybe they trade him at the deadline to get a better return. It should be interesting the next couple of weeks in Cleveland. Let’s not forget the NFL draft is approaching.
