Top 10 Cleveland Athletes of All Time: #9 – Joe Thomas
Coming in at number nine on our list of the Top 10 Cleveland Athletes of All Time is the former left tackle for the Cleveland Browns, Joe Thomas. Thomas is unquestionably the greatest offensive lineman in the history of the franchise. Thomas was voted to 10 Pro Bowls, seven first-team All-Pro selections and two second-team All-Pro selections during his 11 seasons. He has widely been regarded as one of the NFL’s greatest offensive lineman of all time, particularly noted as one of the best left tackles in NFL history. Noted for his durability, quickness and athleticism at left tackle, many attribute his legendary pass-blocking skills.
Thomas would be higher on the list if the Browns had a little more success. As of a matter of fact, the Browns had a record of 48 wins and 128 losses. And think about this; 10 of those 48 wins came in Thomas’ rookie year.
Thomas has two staggering stats: Of the 6,680 pass-blocking attempts, Thomas only allowed 30 sacks. Secondly, his ridiculous consecutive snap streak, which was 10,363. The Browns honored Thomas by placing him in their Ring of Honor at First Energy Stadium.
Thomas will eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2023.
