The NFL on OBJ Leaving NYC for CLE

Hey, Cleveland.

There is only one thing all of the recent acronym-laced headlines resembling alphabet soup could mean, Odell Beckham Jr. is coming to Cleveland. The excitement is palpable around The Land and I really enjoy seeing how happy our players and fans are with this turn of events. I admit to feeling a lot of joy when I think about all of the fairly recent tweets saying OBJ would never come to Cleveland. It turns out never is a mighty long time.

As you would expect, our players took to Twitter to express his jubilation regarding the transaction. Safety Damarious Randall spoke the feelings of many Browns players and fans when he tweeted simply, “John Dorsey is officially a genius…”

There is something special about knowing Dorsey and company nearly broke the internet and totally shocked the sports world. I can’t lie to you, Cleveland. I literally laughed out loud when I read that the New York Times called the transaction “a stunning, audacious move” as well as a “trade (that) is a thunderbolt transaction that will galvanize the (Browns) franchise.”

In a downright odd move, the New York Giants waited 40 minutes to announce the deal on Twitter, and the tweet seemed lacking in a bit of relevant information.

“The #NYGiants have acquired Kevin Zeitler, Jabrill Peppers and a pair of draft picks from the Cleveland Browns (pending physicals).”

Ummmm… no mention of OBJ in the announcement? As you can imagine, the Giants were mercilessly raked over the coals by irate fans. Inevitable? Of course, but failing to mention Beckham in the announcement became an invitation for fans to rail hard against the team which is now obviously in a rebuilding phase. As an aside, our Browns waited two minutes into the league’s new year before tweeting,

“WE GOT HIM. Welcome to Cleveland, @obj!”

The reactions from around the league, point to the fact that the Beckham trade was more than a little unexpected.

• Jacksonville Jaguar, Jalen Ramsey tweeted “I can’t even say what I wanna say… just wow! This a crazy business.”

• Tyrann Mathieu, Kansas City Chiefs safety said of the Beckham trade, “WHAT IS GOING ON.”

• Cornerback from the Arizona Cardinals, Patrick Peterson, spoke for many when he tweeted, “WOW WHAT JUST HAPPENED?”

Of course, the most meaningful reaction regarding the Odell Beckham Jr. trade came from OBJ, himself.

“I am extremely excited to be a part of this organization and the direction they are headed. I’ve already witnessed the energy fans bring in that city having been to some playoff games at The Q. Browns fans deserve a winning football team. This is a fresh start for me and it’s going to be great to join Baker and Jarvis on this team.”

Welcome to Cleveland, Odell. We all look forward to seeing your impact on this team.
