Last Thursday night at the NFL Honors Awards. Cleveland Browns quarterback Joe Flacco won the Comeback Player of the Year Award. He was the main reason the Cleveland Browns won 11 games and earned a wildcard playoff berth. He did this while joining the team late in the season.
Joe Flacco’s first start as quarterback with the Cleveland Browns was in Los Angeles California against the Los Angeles Rams in week 13 of the 2023 season. The Browns did lose the game. But Flacco flashed his ability to move the offense. With Flacco at quarterback, the Browns went on to win the next four consecutive games and earn the AFC 5th playoff seed as a wild-card team. His stats were even more impressive than the 4-1 record.
In 2023 Joe Flacco had 123 completions in 204 pass attempts with a 60.2% completion percentage. He also had 13 touchdowns for 8 interceptions with the Cleveland Browns. His passer rating was 90.2 and his overall quarterback rating of 48.2. His stats are not the only reason he won the award.
Joe Flacco rescued the Cleveland Browns season at the age of 38 years old. He turned 39 years old on January 16th of this year. He was able to not only be productive but be excellent at times while joining the Browns late in the season. He didn’t get a training camp or off-season program to learn the offense. And yet he surpassed expectations in 2023. Flacco, the fans, and the team want to stay together in 2024. What we all want is for him to contribute to a Lombardi Trophy in February of 2025.
