Swap Baker For Johnny…How Good Are The Browns?

I had to do it.

I can’t let go of Johnny Manziel. I was polarized by the 22nd pick in the 2014 Draft by the Browns. He was exciting; a threat to pass, a threat to run. He had swagger and an edge, unlike many other quarterbacks the game had ever seen.

Some won’t want to agree with this, but in a lot of ways, Baker Mayfield is like a better version of Johnny Manziel. Obviously, Baker’s attributes are better. We saw that from his rookie season. He’s much more accurate and a much better leader.

BUT…

Let’s remember who Johnny was throwing the ball to in 2014. Andrew Hawkins, Miles Austin, Taylor Gabriel & Travis Benjamin. In 2015, it was Dwayne Bowe, Brian Hartline, Andrew Hawkins and Taylor Gabriel.

That is garbage for any quarterback.

Now, I will not defend some of Manziel’s actions off the field and his poor attitude either. However, let’s remember Mayfield has not been flawless either on and off the field and took a look of criticism, much of which I felt was unfair.

I would be curious to see what would have happened if we took Dwayne Bowe and subbed in Odell Beckham Jr. If we took Brian Hartline and subbed in Jarvis Landry. Even toss in Antonio Callaway and David Njoku.

Would Manziel have been better?

I would say CERTAINLY YES. Now, definitely not as good as Mayfield. Manziel was picked in the first round of an NFL Draft. He had some football skills that were displayed at Texas A&M that got him to the pros. The Browns stunk and that’s what killed his career before he had a chance to blossom.

Everything would have been better with the switches. His passing, his ability to run as the field would have been way more spread out and he would have been more excited to be a Brown with talent to throw the ball to on his team.

The offensive line now – BETTER

The defense as a whole – BETTER

To whom it may concern:

I love Baker Mayfield. I am so excited for this year. By no means am I trying to say I would like a different QB to start the 2019 year. This is simply curiosity and a hypothetical from the past.

FYI: Johnny Manziel currently plays quarterback for the AAF’s Memphis Express.
