Signed, Sealed, and Delivered

Cleveland finally has their “guy”. The franchise quarterback they have been searching for since Bernie Kosar. The media found out last week that the Browns were planning to have a meeting with Deshaun Watson. That did not sit well with Baker Mayfield, as once he caught wind of that, he immediately requested to be traded. To make matters worse, the Browns spoke out about Baker Mayfield. The Browns stated that they wanted to have an adult at quarterback. Friday, the Browns shocked the football world as they traded three first-round picks, a 2023 third-round pick, and a 2024 fourth-round pick in return for Watson’s services. The Texans will now select third and thirteenth overall in this year’s draft.
I have not even mentioned the craziest part of this move. The Browns signed Watson to a five-year 230 million dollar contract, and it is fully guaranteed. It is 80 million dollars more guaranteed than Aaron Rogers’ deal, and Watson is now the highest-paid player in the NFL. While it is easy to say that Deshaun Watson is better than Baker Mayfield, this move will come with plenty of scrutiny. There is a problem with this move. Watson missed all of last season due to his off-field issues, as Watson got himself into hot water with masseuses. Multiple reports say Watson will not face criminal charges. However, he is facing twenty-two civil lawsuits. It is hard to believe that Watson will walk away from this without being disciplined by the NFL. Watson will definitely get suspended but for how many games?
The Browns have made other moves during the offseason, but right now we will keep our focus on the quarterbacks. Case Keenum was recently traded to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for a 2022 seventh-round draft pick. The Browns needed to find themselves a backup, therefore they signed Jacoby Brissett to a one-year deal. As for Baker Mayfield, he has since requested a trade to the Colts. Browns fans will be calling for general manager Andrew Berry’s job if the Browns can’t bring home the Lombardi trophy within the next five years. Cleveland has their quarterback now, can Deshaun bring them to the promised land? The season can’t start soon enough.
