Here we are in the second week of 2022 and Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association have yet to reach an agreement on a new collective bargaining agreement.

Frankly, it does not come as a surprise. Greed is an issue in the major sports industries. The universal designated hitter, postseason expansion teams and service time for players were topics discussed today. It would be beneficial for the league to implement the universal designated hitter, as it creates more excitement and lowers the risk of injury to pitchers.

I am all for the expansion of postseason teams as it is exciting and creates more revenue for the league. I am not in favor of commissioner Rob Manfred’s idea of allowing teams to pick their opponents. That is ridiculous and ruins the game point-blank.

The other major topic was owners are opposed to lowering the service time from six to five years, which would allow players to hit the free-agent market a year earlier. The owners want to manipulate the salary cap and have their players go through an extra year of arbitration.

It remains to be seen when the 2022 MLB season will begin. Unfortunately, I feel that the season will start in the middle of May.
