My Way Too Early 53-Man Roster

Now that the Browns have settled into their off-season workouts and news is scarce, let’s take a look at the Browns’ potential 53-man roster way too early. I’m going to assume the Browns re-sign DE Jadeveon Clowney and also take into consideration the comments made by GM Andrew Berry in the off-season on improving the passing game. Last year’s 53-man roster was set evenly on offense (25) and defense (25), so I’ll be doing the same breakdown. Let’s go.
Quarterbacks (3). Deshaun Watson, Jacoby Brissett, Josh Dobbs.
Running Backs (4). Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, Demetric Felton, Jerome Ford.
Wide Receivers (5). Amari Cooper, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Anthony Schwartz, Jakeem Grant, Jr., David Bell.
Tight End (3). David Njoku, Harrison Bryant, Miller Forristall.
Offensive Line (10). Jedrick Wills, Joel Bitonio, Nick Harris, Wyatt Teller, Jack Conklin, James Hudson, III, Michael Dunn, Ethan Pocic, Blake Hance, Chris Hubbard.
Defensive Line (10). Jadeveon Clowney, Jordan Elliot, Tommy Togiai, Myles Garrett, Stephen Weatherly, Perrion Winfrey, Sheldon Day, Taven Bryant, Alex Wright, Chase Winovich.
Linebackers (6). Anthony Walker, Sione Takitaki, Jacob Phillips, Tony Fields, III, Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Willie Harvey, Jr.
Secondary (9). Denzel Ward, Greedy Williams, Greg Newsome, Marlin Emerson, Jr., A.J. Green, John Johnson, III, Grant Delpit, Ronnie Harrison, Richard, LeCounte, III.
Specialists (3). Cade York, Corey Bojorquez, Charlie Hughlett.

If Watson isn’t suspended at the beginning of the season, then the Browns will place Josh Dobbs on the practice squad as their emergency quarterback. This will open a spot at wide receiver for rookie UDFA Isaiah Weston. If Watson is suspended, the Browns might stick with the wide receivers on this roster and add another tight end or re-sign FB Johnny Stanton. On the offensive line, the only player I see who might be replaced is Chris Hubbard, because of his age and injury history.
On defense, the defensive line room is overcrowded. Jordan Elliott could be replaced by rookie UDFA Glen Logan. I think Togiai has better upside than Elliott, so he’s safe. I have Stephen Weatherly making the roster only because of the guaranteed money he’s receiving. If the Browns trim the defensive line group down to nine, then I could see another safety or cornerback being added. Last year the Browns carried eight defensive linemen.
A lot can happen in between now and training camp and there will be some tough decisions to made concerning the roster. It’s very deep at certain positions and reliant on rookies at other positions. If the past history of GM Andrew Berry adding talent is a guide, then this roster can contend for the playoffs and the AFC North title.
