MLB: Make “Bedtime” A Problem With The Playoffs For Kids
Bedtime.
It was one of the worst things ever as a kid and there was always something cool on later at night. I remember recording games on the VCR tapes and watching them the next morning. Obviously, I couldn’t just grab my iPhone and see all the scores, highlights and such like adults do now…
Anyway, I see these times for MLB playoff games during the day. For each team, not just the Guardians, starting a game in the afternoon, especially during the week, is a terrible move. I think of all the people having to find a way to follow the game while at work, where they can’t just call off or leave early. Also, all of the fans who can’t attend the home game because of a schedule conflict.
Sure, some kids will actually get to see the whole game. That is, if they’re not in aftercare or whatnot cause both their parents work. Then, it’s no game at all…
Make parents have to decide if they’re avid fans and their children get to see the entire game, or stay rigid and stick to when it’s time to sleep. You’ll show them the highlights before the bus comes in the morning, but everyone knows that’s not the same. Maybe they’ll be able to stay up until the end.
Growing up, having to miss any Cleveland game because of school or any other obligation was hard. But to miss a playoff game was something so horrific to imagine that I would at least try to fake sick and get home early. Like we’re talking barfing up lunch seriousness…
Let’s also focus on all of the local bars/restaurants and event places where fans attend to watch each game. The amount of money those places are losing is enormous. Also, just simply having your best buddies over to watch the game is unable to make it because of the work schedule.
Guardians’ ALDS Game Times:
Game 1: Saturday at 1 pm at Progressive Field
Game 2: Monday at 5 pm at Progressive Field
Monday will have fans racing home to watch as much of the game as possible. Still not a chance to get to the stadium, obviously. The first game on Saturday… Of course, thinking of classic baseball is thinking of it during the day. However, just remembering the atmosphere at night being that much better, with some of my best memories watching the INDIANS growing up…AT NIGHT!
I always mention “LINDOR WITH A SWING AND A DRIVE!” If you know, you know. And everyone remembers Rajai Davis’ epic blast over the wall in left. Why is the MLB trying to ruin that so some fans stay and watch more than their own team?
And this isn’t about me.
I am actually at home most of each day due to illness and honestly, every day game during the week day during the season I thought of as a blessing to get to watch, unlike those my age and above at the office or working at the dentist. It’s about the “me” growing up that was blessed to get to see every game because of my parents and also the timing it was scheduled. And if Mommy said “bedtime,” well, I may have tried to throw something like the pitcher until Daddy yelled at me.
I do not have any children myself, but if I did, what I would do is record the game and watch every single pitch with my youngster(s) once again…this time as soon as they could. Pretend not to know the final even if the team lost 10-0. And guess what…your children will love the sacrifice and tell you years down the road how much that meant to them.
To the MLB: read the USA. Make every set of parents have to decide if bedtime comes into play when there’s a playoff baseball game for the team your whole family loves.
Regardless, Go Guardians!
