2. “Bend, don’t break” should be the mantra for the Browns defense.
The Browns defense certainly wasn’t pretty. They gave up 350 yards and allowed McCaffery and Newton to run all over them. Things weren’t inspiring, but the defense made plays when it mattered. A goal-line stand has now saved the Browns in two out their last three wins. The secondary looked terrible as Newton and McCaffery continued to drive down the field, but plays were made when it mattered inside the five-yard line. They certainly got help from Carolina’s penalties throughout the game, but the job got done nonetheless.
This is a defense that thrives off takeaways, and with the exception of the interception that ended the game, none were created. When the Browns run into a team that takes care of the football, they struggle. More defensive playmakers should be added through free agency and next year’s draft to bring consistency in getting stops.
