Seeing that video of former Cavalier Delonte West was extremely sad. It’s a guy that had it all as a NBA player for over a decade and completely lost it both physically and mentally. However, I was pretty surprised to see the police officer that recorded the outburst is now suspended.
For his career, West averaged 9.7 points, 3.6 assists and 2.9 rebounds a game. This was my favorite memory:

“Earlier this week, a video surfaced ofafter allegedly getting involved in a physical altercation in the Washington D.C. area. According to NBC News, the Maryland police officer that shot the video has been suspended.
Prince George’s County (Md.) Police learned on Tuesday that one of their officers recorded the viral video of West sitting shirtless on the curb. The video made its rounds on social media following the incident and the department conducted a full investigation leading up to the suspension.” – CBS Sports
I get this idea that recording and subsequently posting that video is embarrassing to Delonte West and could go against the “code of conduct” of the force. More so if it was Delonte changing clothes in a bathroom or peeping through the window of his house with a camera.
This goes beyond that and it’s clearly not a privacy thing!
What is the reason that we are even talking about Delonte and his issues? Well, it’s because that officer boldly recorded and shared the video of him on the street…
Frankly, I don’t know what the officer’s intentions were in recording/sharing. What I do know is that it drew attention to the situation, a horrible one.
Delonte West, the person and not the player, needs help.
Mental health is an important issue to be talking about and if it takes a video going viral…isn’t that a good thing? Maybe the NBA can do something to help?! Former teammates, players or coaches can help the man. The league can figure out a way to make sure this doesn’t happen to other players going through similar struggles that have tormented Delonte, clearly.
After all, famous people are not immune to issues. We’ve seen that many, many times and it ends in death way too often.
