The Cleveland Browns have announced quarterback Johnny Manziel entered a rehab facility last Wednesday. Details remain uncertain for how long or what Manziel is entering rehab. Manziel’s off-field issues and alcohol seem to be the reason he has entered rehab. An ESPN source had this to say about Manziel, “The quarterback is voluntarily entering treatment as a direct result of his lifestyle away from the field, and he informed people in his circle last week that he wants to “figure out his value system.” Manziel has vowed to the media that he wants to be the guy in Cleveland but his words have not lived up to his actions. It appears Manziel has had something click inside of him and wants to change his behavior and character. It seemed as if no one or anything would change Manziel’s wild party behavior. Maybe it was the recent failed drug test by close friend and teammate Josh Gordon that gave Manziel a much-needed wake up call. Gordon failed to address his problems and it is evident with another season long suspension looming.
Manziel’s advisor Brian Beckworth had this to say on the situation, “Johnny knows there are areas in which he needs to improve in order to be a better family member, friend and teammate, and he thought the offseason was the right time to take this step.” This is a positive day in the 22 year olds young career. The first step of addressing a problem is realizing you have a problem and seeking help. I am proud of Manziel for making this effort and realizing his off-field life was weighing down his play on the field. Browns fans need to support Manziel and his efforts to be the franchise quarterback we all so badly want. Manziel has the backing from Browns GM Ray Farmer who had this to say, “We respect Johnny’s initiative in this decision and will fully support him throughout this process. Our players’ health and well-being will always be of the utmost importance to the Cleveland Browns.” The real Johnny Manziel stood up today and showed the Browns community and NFL he has heart and the guts to change his life and become a successful NFL quarterback. Today is the start of something special for Johnny Manziel because his actions spoke louder than his words. His actions finally shown though and that’s a great sign for Manziel and the Browns. I am excited to see the progressions Manziel makes on and off the field in 2015.
