The left tackle situation just got more interesting as the Cleveland Browns tried Joel Bitonio out at left tackle. This move comes a bit as a surprise to me because it will change the left side of the offensive line. Shon Coleman, Greg Robinson and rookie Austin Corbett were fighting for the left tackle position.
After further investigation, this move makes sense. Shon Coleman hasn’t been anything special or hasn’t done anything to stand out. It’s still early though so I wouldn’t count him out yet. Greg Robinson suffered a concussion so that doesn’t help his case at all and Corbett is better suited at guard. Even Joe Thomas has been on record confirming that statement.
So where does that leave us?
Bitonio slides outside where he isn’t quite comfortable. He hasn’t played that position since college at Nevada so there is going to be a learning curve, but I feel confident that Bitonio can adjust (if that’s what’s best for the team). Then you insert Corbett, another Nevada product, at guard where it might be a natural fit. Our starting line can possible look like: Bitonio, Corbett, JC Tretter, Kevin Zeitler, and Chris Hubbard.
Nothing is finalized yet so the roster can still change.
Robinson has to put in work, but only if he comes back healthy and Coleman still has time to improve and earn that spot. I’m pulling for Coleman, but even now as I’m writing this article, Joel Bitonio sounds better and better as our best option unless something dramatic happens.
