It’s Official!!

In surprising fashion, the Cleveland Browns uncharacteristically spent money on one of their own pending free agents. A deal has been officially announced with linebacker Jamie Collins inking a four-year extension worth $50 million. Only $26.5 million of that is guaranteed, making this a pretty solid deal.

Collins was initially acquired mid-season through a trade with the New England Patriots. Cleveland coughed up a compensatory third or fourth round pick for the Pro Bowler and I was stunned. Did the Patriots really trade a player of his caliber for a conditional pick? Yes, and it was worth it too.

In just eight games with the Browns, Collins registered 69 tackles, which was good enough for third on the team. Seven of those tackles went for a loss and the linebacker also notched two sacks and a forced fumble.

Jamie comes from a winning franchise and has that competitive edge that Cleveland needs. He’s a young, veteran whose presence will be valuable in the locker room. Plus, with the addition of defensive coordinator, Gregg Williams, Collins fits perfectly into the aggressive style he wants to run.

I couldn’t be more excited for this news. Collins has the physically and brains to impact games. We got to witness a small sample size of what he is capable of and I’m thrilled to see what he brings to the table in the future.
