The crown-jewel in the starting pitcher Corey Kluber trade with the Texas Rangers has been suspended 80 games. Emmanuel Clase tested positive for the performance-enhancing drug, Boldenone. The 22-year-old reliever had a 2.31 ERA in one season and will earn $1,875 million in 2020.
Note that Clase’s suspension will not start until the season begins.
Now, Texas will owe Kluber $17.5 million in 2020. He will earn $18 million in 2021 if he pitches 160 innings next season.
The only other piece the Indians got in return is outfielder, Delino DeShields Jr. A career .246 hitter. Thus, the Indians are losing out on the main piece of this deal due to a failed test. However, the finances remain the same and the front office saves money.
