Iman Shumpert Practiced Sunday, May Debut Against Bulls

EDIT (2:44 PM) Shumpert will not debut against the Bulls tonight, however, he will complete a full practice again tomorrow and is expected to return as soon as Friday.

Yesterday, newly acquired Cavs shooting guard Iman Shumpert completed his first full practice with the Cavaliers, a sign that things can only go up for him. Shumpert suffered a separated left shoulder while still on the Knicks on 12/12/14 in a win against the 76ers, which also happened to be the Knicks’ last win to date. When traded over to the Cavs on January 5th, Shumpert was having one of the better of his four seasons, averaging 9.3 PPG, 3.3 APG, 3.4 RPG, and 1.3 SPG.

In addition to practicing yesterday, Shumpert was seen shooting around today as a backup. If playing, Shumpert will likely see limited minutes defending either Bulls guard E’twaun Moore or guard Aaron Brooks. I wouldn’t expect to see him testing his shoulder on Derrick Rose nor Jimmy Butler, and I don’t think Kirk Hinrich is a possibility either. Regardless of who he guards, it’ll be nice to finally see Shumpert debut in a Cavs uniform. His shoulder may not be 100%, but he’ll get to showcase his quickness and some of his handles under the situation that he makes an appearance.

In Shumpert’s season debut with the Knicks against the Bulls, he wasn’t really in his rhythm, going 2-7 from the field with 5 points and an assist. However, he did have a nice defensive performance with 3 steals and two defensive boards with 20 minutes on the court. If Shump does debut for us today, it’ll be nice to see where he excels post-rehab.

Regardless, things are looking up for Shumpert and the Cavs, who also look to have Kevin Love back tonight. And with Shumpert debuting, I think Anderson Varejao may find his “Best Hair” award in danger.
