If I Said The Browns Were Gonna Start 3-1, You’d Say…
I’d call myself a bunch of not-nice words in a diatribe of self-deprecation! Or, I would tell my family and friends about this crazy dream I had that the Browns started the season that way and even more so that it was Deshaun Watson at quarterback in the dream!
Well, believe it, Cleveland. Savor it. Soak it in. The Cleveland Browns, with Deshaun Watson at quarterback and after a 27-24 victory on Thursday Night Football against the Pittsburgh Steelers, are now 3-1.
Now, it’s hard to be wrong about anything, and as I point out in each post, so many people hate Deshaun Watson for his personal life and wanted to see the Browns lose despite being fans before. Also, many wanted the Browns to lose for the top pick in the draft, which would be a quarterback for the future.
A factor that makes it okay that we were all wrong (not including the horrific years of his past with play and injury) serves as a reminder. Watson and the Browns were absolutely terrible in the preseason. Now, I know your uncle in saying… “THOSE GAMES DON’T MATTER AND ARE A WASTE OF TIME!” And in many ways, it’s true. However, they simply served as an example for all the haters to hate. Also, his comments to the media added fuel to the large fire already roaring hot…
Well, Deshaun decided to change back to the way he was in Houston, allowing him to get such a massive contract in the first place that has been rightfully criticized. He’s elusive in the pocket, finding those receivers, able to tuck and run when needed and mainly able to stay healthy. The healthy part is probably the biggest one because one hit, one torn this or that and it’s all over. It’s the hard part of football, sports and life in general…
So, what now?
Well, this weekend is about the Cleveland Guardians because, of course, their first playoff game at home against the Chicago White Sox is on Saturday afternoon. The Browns are obviously off play until next Sunday in New York against the Jets (1-2 at the time of writing).
A part of me wants to plan my trip to the Super Bowl and get a hot date for the game that my Browns are in. But, of course, as previously mentioned, everything can change. It’s a long season and Watson and company have to continue with this type of play moving forward.
Besides Watson, another factor that is unexpected is just how great the wide receivers for the Browns have been. It’s again something not really seen in the preseason to the extent of the regular season thus far. What needs to improve even more is fewer penalties, the running game and protection of Watson so he can choose to run and not have to, or get injured that way via a big hit.
I wrote about how the Thursday Night game could serve as a signature of Watson’s season looking back. He went 24 of 33 passes for 268 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Those aren’t magnificent, but enough to get the win and that’s what matters most.
Reminder: One missed epic kick and it could’ve been a Steelers overtime win (we’ll never know). Not to dispute the win, but a reminder that all three of these wins ended with close scores.
Congratulations, Browns. Celebrate the win, but remember it’s a long season and the locking in must continue cause a 5-12 season with this start is going to make all of this into nothing.
