How The AFC Was Won: Cleveland Browns Edition

What a time to be a Cleveland Browns fan! Years from now I believe everyone will remember where they were the day that we acquired Odell Beckham Jr. from the NY Giants. I think if we want to talk about a clear winner of the free agency period, I would have to pick the Browns. We were able to give our franchise quarterback Baker Mayfield one of the if not the game’s top playmaker in OBJ. Then, we were able to fortify our already impressive defensive front by trading for defensive end Olivier Vernon as well as signing defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson. That’s not to mention that we earlier signed Kareem Hunt who will come back after eight games, who we all know is an elite talented back. Cleveland quickly went from the laughingstock of the NFL to Super Bowl contenders. In John Dorsey we trust is slowly becoming a universal slogan in the Cleveland area.

Odell Beckham Jr. signed a 5-year $95 million dollar contract with only $65 million guaranteed prior to being traded to the Browns. I know we’ve heard the rumblings he wants to restructure his contract like AB has done with the Raiders. I don’t see this as a problem, I know I am in the minority here, but he’s a top-three WR in the league and, in my opinion, the best in the league. I feel like with as smart as John Dorsey is, he would have known about this prior to finalizing this deal as Dorsey is a no-nonsense GM. I also believe the media tries to make these things out to be more than they are by constantly keeping tabs on everything the high-profile athletes. I understand it comes with the territory, but I think sometimes we forget they are people, too.

A quote from John Dorsey that I feel is fitting though is “Teams win in the fall, they do not win in March.” I love the whole culture change that has happened when it comes to the Cleveland Browns as a whole. As I said earlier, we used to be more of a joke in the league to most others, but now we are a threat. I feel like Baker Mayfield also has brought a sense of hope to not only us fans, but his teammates. Being a fan for so long and watching so many tough seasons go by, I absolutely love to see a guy who is so excited to be a part of this organization and already building a relationship with his fanbase. Baker has already won the hearts of Browns fans and even players from other teams can see how much positivity and drive he brings with him. It’s the kind of culture shock that the Cleveland Browns Organization needed and it’ll be so interesting to see what we have to offer come fall.
