Deron Williams signed with the Cavs on Monday afternoon after being waived by the Dallas Mavericks, the third team of his career. Williams has been in the NBA for 13 years and is known for his scoring and his playmaking ability. Williams played for the Utah Jazz for the first six years of his career and averaged 17.5 point and 9.2 rebounds per game in his tenure with the Jazz. Williams played for the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets for the next four season and thrived with their “super team.” In his years in New Jersey/Brooklyn, he averaged 16.8 points and 7.2 assists per game. Williams has played the past 1.5 years for the Dallas Mavericks and has averaged 13.6 points and 6.2 assists per game.

LeBron was begging the front office for a playmaker and he has been given one. The Cavaliers have been without a serviceable backup point guard this season after having Mo Williams and Matthew Dellavedova leave this past off-season. Kay Felder hasn’t been cutting it as no one expected a rookie point guard to successfully take over the reigns of a defending champion squad.

Deron Williams has been starting for the Mavericks all season.

Williams is known for his passing and averaged 8.2 assists over his career. His numbers are down for this year where he is averaging only 6.8 assists this year. Williams missed 18 games this season due to injury and missed eight games through January and February but it seems that he is past it and used the All-Star break to get healthy.

Williams had been a trade target for the Wine and Gold since the start of the month but it eventually appearded that the Mavericks would waive him or buy out his contract. With the Mavericks adding Yogi Ferrell, 23 years old, and the emergence of Seth Curry, 26 years old, it was only a matter of time before the aging Deron Williams, 32 years old, would be nudged out.

Deron Williams will be a great addition for the Cavs and will fill in one of the serious holes that the team had. Williams has not stated when he will be ready for action but we assume he will be ready to go in the coming week.
