Free Agency Update

The Cavaliers signing star point guard Kyrie Irving to a five year, 90 million dollar extension was a great way to start off the free agency period.  However, there’s plenty of talent still out there for the taking. Here’s more on whom exactly the Wine & Gold are trying to lure to Cleveland:

Chandler Parsons, SF, Houston –  Heading into his 4th season, Parsons is a restricted free agent of the Houston Rockets. Last season, he averaged 16.6 points, 4 assists, a 5.5 rebounds per game. He shot 47 percent from the floor, and 37 percent from downtown. Parsons is the ultimate sharpshooter with length. He can score from both the inside and outside.

Trevor Ariza, SF, Washington – This savvy veteran has already been in the league for 10 years. Last season with the Washington Wizards, the small forward averaged 14.4 points and 6.2 rebounds each contest. He shot 46 percent from the field, including 40 percent from deep. His 14.4 points average was second highest for his career (14.9, 2009-10, Houston). This journeyman will give you a consistent effort each night, but isn’t going to make you say ‘WOW’ either.

Marcin Gortat, C, Washington – You may remember him from his days with the Orlando Magic, as center Marcin Gortat was part of the ’08-’09 squad that owned the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals. Now, heading into his 8 season, Gortat has really developed into a solid center. Last season with the Wizards, he averaged 13.2 points per game and 9.5 rebounds a night. This Polish-born player offers a toughness that is needed on both sides of the ball, especially defensively.

Greg Monroe, PF, Detroit – Heading into his 6th season, Greg Monroe is a beast in the middle. He averaged 15.2 points a night, and 9.3 rebounds too. He’s durable as well, playing in all 82 games last season for Detroit. Like Gortat, Monroe brings a toughness to a team that is needed.

It’s no secret that the Cavs have a lot of work to do in the coming days to improve their young roster. The addition of any one of these players would do just that. The rumors will continue to swirl, and who knows, the Cavs could be targeting someone totally off the radar.
