The Cleveland Browns were busy once the calendar year began this offseason by making crucial moves on both the defensive and now reportedly the offensive side of the ball too.

It started with the re-signing of DT Maurice Hurst for a single year of up to 3.2 million dollars. Then DE Za’Darius Smith re-signed for two years, 32.5 million. Next, the Dawgs signed LB Jordan Hicks for a two-year deal, eight million dollars.

These moves are crucial to bring back a defensive that was excellent last season in the ultimate run to the playoffs.

Hurst is now 31, 6’2 and 291 pounds, had 22 tackles and 1.5 sacks with a single interception. Smith is now 31, 6’4 and 275 pounds had 27 tackles and 5.5 sacks.

Hicks is now 31, 6’1 and 236 pounds. He had 129 total tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble with Minnesota last year.

The Browns were FIRST in the league last season in yards allowed with only giving up 270.2 a game. However, the team was tied for 11th with giving up 44 total touchdowns on the year.

The breaking news this morning is that the Browns just signed quarterback Jameis Winston to be the backup quarterback for Deshaun Watson this season. A single-year deal worth up to 8.7 million dollars.

Last season with New Orleans, Winston threw for 264 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions (57.4 ranking). The veteran has played nine years in the league (four with New Orleans and five previously with Tampa Bay).

It will be interesting to see if Winston ends up getting a shot or if Watson is able to stay healthy and play the entire season for the Browns this year. It’s always good to have a solid backup just in case…

The quarterback controversy is real in Cleveland! When isn’t it? Look for the team to continue to make more moves as the days go forward. It’s crucial to continue to build this team into the playoff-caliber squad that it was last year.

This just in: The Browns signed running back Nyheim Hines on a deal worth up to 3.5 million. He last played in 2022 after a jet ski accident caused him to miss the entire 2023 season. He primarily returned kicks for the Buffalo Bills.

*The Browns have re-signed G Michael Dunn, DT Shelby Harris and also G Hakeem Adeniji was previously on the Vikings.

Certainly, so far so good in the moves already made. Remember, the Browns made a trade with the Denver Browns for a wide receiver in Jerry Jeudy and gave up two late-round picks. DETAILS ON THAT CLICK HERE.

Via ABJ: Teams start negotiating with free agents on Monday at noon. Any deals, be it free-agent or trades, can’t become official until the new league year begins Wednesday at 4 p.m.
