Fixing the Browns: Kirk Cousins
With Alex Smith being traded to the Washington Redskins, one thing has become crystal clear this week in the NFL: Kirk Cousins will soon be out of Washington. New general manager John Dorsey and the Cleveland Browns need to have an “all in” approach to land Cousins in the weeks ahead.
Without question, from a monetary standpoint, the Browns should be the frontrunner in the race to sign Cousins. Cleveland has over $100 million in cap space. That’s plenty of money to pay Cousins and a few more pieces. Now, reports from a few sources claim that Cousins does not care about the money and he wants to be a winner. Looking at NFL free agency historically, money talks and the Browns have a lot of promise through the draft to become a winner very soon.
John Dorsey has always been known as a “build through the draft” type of GM. Dorsey was never known to make any blockbuster free agency moves. Hopefully, with the Cleveland Browns, he can have the best of both worlds. We already know Dorsey can work his magic in April with a surplus of high draft picks. Before that, though, he needs to handle the excessive money owned by the Browns and secure our franchise quarterback: Kirk Cousins.
It is understood that this upcoming draft has a ton of talent at the quarterback position. Big names like Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold and Josh Allen are all young talent that have been associated with the Browns. However, none of these young men have shown true NFL readiness and they would take at least one season to figure things out. By adding Kirk Cousins, the Browns can avoid the risk of a rookie quarterback. Furthermore, DeShone Kizer will have the opportunity to sit behind and learn from Cousins.
The Cleveland Browns are in dire need of a quick franchise turnaround and they have the means to do it. Take a look at the Jacksonville Jaguars, a very young team that won only three games last year. In 2017, Jacksonville managed to put pieces together in free agency and the draft and ultimately fell one game short from playing in the Super Bowl. This is the type of turnaround that the Browns need and Cousins is just the guy to do it. As an organization, as a fan base, the Cleveland Browns have suffered enough. Sign Kirk Cousins and change the Cleveland Browns forever.
