1957-1960: The Numbered Helmet Experiment
1957 saw the Browns experiment by adding players’ numbers to the sides of the helmet in brown text. In 1960, the team added the brown trim to the white helmet stripe, a feature of the uniform that has been unchanged ever since. This was an iffy addition because helmet numbers are not too appealing on any team, as they somehow make the design more boring than just a blank helmet. There isn’t any hard evidence to suggest this, but call it a ‘gut feeling’ that is likely a common sentiment. The numbered helmets as well as the orange jerseys would make scattered appearances as throwbacks in the early 2000’s.
