Face Of The Franchise

Opening Day is only a day away, though Cleveland fans must be jumping for joy. The front office finally decided to stop being frugal. Cleveland finally gave Jose Ramirez a contract extension. Guardians general manager Mike Chernoff made a decision which was the right decision, not to trade their best player. Jose Ramirez received a five-year contract extension worth 124 million dollars. Ramirez is guaranteed 150 million dollars and rightfully so considering he has finished in the top three of the AL MVP voting three times during his career. Last season, J Ram hit for an average of .266, with 36 home runs and 103 RBIs. The deal is history in the making. Before this move, the Guardians had never agreed to hand out a contract worth 100 million. It is nice to see this team spending money because they have young, controllable talent and are close to contending.
Rumors swirled all offseason that the Blue Jays were interested in trading for Ramirez and putting him at second base. Then earlier this week, the Padres were targeting Ramirez as they were looking to have someone fill in while Manny Machado is on the injured list. Fans have felt poignant over the last few years. Every fan remembers the tough times more than the great times. Cleveland lost the World Series to the Cubs back in 2016. They opted to trade players or allowed them to head to free agency. That list includes Francisco Lindor, Corey Kluber, and Trevor Bauer. Jose had expressed his desire to remain in Cleveland, and he will stay here for the foreseeable future. It is refreshing to know that there is still loyalty in professional sports. Cleveland has their guy, and now it is time to “Play Ball”!
