Courtland Sutton is a large-bodied receiver at 6’3”, 216. He has decent speed as shown by his 4.54 40 at the Combine. Sutton put up 18 reps on the bench and demonstrated a 35.5” vertical. He is definitely a physical specimen.
The wide receiver showed excellent production at SMU with over 3,000 yards and 31 touchdowns. He’s a big receiver who can win in 50-50 situations. Concerns with Sutton include his desire to show consistent effort and his ability to gain separation in the NFL. Ultimately, Sutton has the tools to be a very productive receiver in the NFL, but he will have to work on his routes. He doesn’t lack confidence saying this at the combine:
“I’m a dominating presence and I want to be the guy defenses are always looking for on 3rd-and-five.”
Sutton will come off the board relatively early. Expect him to be gone by the early part of the second round. The hierarchy of this receiver class isn’t clear-cut, but Sutton should be one of the first five receivers taken along with Calvin Ridley and Christian Kirk.
The Browns may be interested in Sutton depending on how the remainder of free agency plays out. They could be tempted if he’s still on the board at 33 or 35. I don’t see them passing on him at 64 if they still have a spot to fill at receiver.
