Examining Kirk Cousins’ Suitors
Minnesota Vikings
Projected Cap Space: $53 million
Current QB’s on Roster: Kyle Sloter
Why Cousins Makes Sense: The Vikings need a QB. Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Bradford and Case Keemun are all free agents. The Vikings are going to pay a QB big money this offseason, why not sign the best one on the market? If Cousins wants to win immediately, then the Vikings offer the best opportunity to do that. The Vikings were a game away from the Super Bowl, boast one of the best defenses in the league and have the offensive talents to make any team jealous. Stefon Diggs, Adam Thielen and Kyle Rudolph make for a great receiving trio, plus dynamic rookie running back, Dalvin Cook, will return from his torn ACL.
Why Cousins Doesn’t Make Sense: Minnesota’s defense is going to get real expensive, real fast. We’ve seen what happened once Seattle had to pay their QB, sacrificing defensive depth. Shariff Floyd, Anthony Barr, Eric Kendricks and Trae Waynes will all need new contracts after this season, not to mention the escalating salaries for players currently under long-term contracts. Signing Cousins to a massive deal means you’re going all-in for 2018 and accepting the consequences later. There’s also the three quarterbacks mentioned earlier. It may be easier to re-sign one of those guys to a cheaper deal and keep the continuity.
