Embrace Peppers and the Browns

Browns fans, it’s us against the world. Everyone outside of Cleveland thinks the Browns are the laughing stock of the league and will be horrible again this season. There are even Browns fans that share that sentiment. We need to rally together and embrace this current Browns team. I have heard too much venom directed especially at rookie safety Jabrill Peppers. Him and the rest of the Browns’ top picks are the key to a successful turnaround for this franchise.

Hating Peppers, Why?

I understand the hatred towards Peppers; he was the enemy from the team up north. The key word is “was.” That is in the past, but now he is here to make your Cleveland Browns a contender. The Browns can’t afford to have another top pick become a bust, so anyone rooting against Peppers is basically rooting for the Browns to fail.

Peppers has athletic talent that flashes on tape. He played all over the field while in college. He returned punts and kickoffs, rushed for three touchdowns and played linebacker for a top defense in the country. Browns’ Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams is going to line Peppers up all over the field. The knock on Peppers is that he only had one interception and one pass defended during his last season. He did, however, show exceptional ball skills during his redshirt freshman year while recording 10 passes defended. He played safety that season before being moved to a roving linebacker this past season. He didn’t have as many opportunities to drop back in pass defense because he was always lined up right at the line of scrimmage.

After being named a Freshman All-American, he followed that up with being named a unanimous All-American this past season. The guy is a football player plain a simple. Line him up on defense and let him freelance and chase the ball down.  The Browns had Troy Polamalu 2.0 fall into their lap with Peppers in my opinion. Polamalu wasn’t a great cover guy but was great at making plays when he able to roam the field chasing the ball. Peppers also has the ability to get to the opposing QB like Polamalu did.

Bright Future

Browns fans, please put the Ohio State bias aside and embrace this kid. Gregg Williams and the Browns are going to unleash Peppers and fellow rookie Myles Garrett this year on opposing teams. This team is going to be exciting to watch, especially this young defense. Just stop the hate and watch these kids grow into future Pro Bowlers while leading the Browns back to being a playoff contender.
