Don’t Give Up On Cleveland Shedeur Sanders

Besides the first week of the Cleveland Browns Season, these past three games have been incredible for Browns starting quarterback Deshaun Watson and the team as a whole. Of course, everyone remembers the quarterback competition with now-backup Shedeur Sanders that took place before this season. Ultimately, most fans, including myself, were in absolute dismay because of the choice. I cited the end-game for the franchise, simply assuming there was no real chance to contend this year, so why start Watson?

Well, the 3-1 start after a fantastic start by Watson has shown everyone to be wrong. He’s thrown 69.6% of passes as completions for 6 touchdowns, only 2 interceptions and a total of 855 yards.

But here’s the key…it’s a long season. Not a best-of-five baseball playoff series with that record to advance. This doesn’t mean that Watson can’t have a great entire year or that I’m still on the high horse that he sucks and it has to be Shedeur Sanders under center next week against the New York Jets on the road.

It’s more of a wait-and-see type of deal…

Last season, Sanders played in eight games, completing 56.6% of passes for 1,400 yards, 7 touchdowns, compared to 10 interceptions. He also rushed 21 times for 169 yards and a single touchdown. Very below-average numbers, hence the fact that there still was a quarterback competition to start this year. The Browns went 3-4 with Sanders starting.

Sanders may still get his opportunity to shine later in the year and this is why it’s important to not jump into the idea that he must get traded to help as a starter for another team instead of Cleveland. That would be the Browns subsequently moving on from the second-year man out of Colorado…already?

As I’ve said in many articles, it’s okay not to like Deshaun Watson as a person to like the fact that the Browns have been winning. It’s also okay to not pretend this team is for sure a Super Bowl contender.

Another factor to remember is that this is Watson’s last year of his contract, so if he doesn’t continue to play at this level for the rest of the season, it’s not as if the Browns are still stuck with him because of his contract. We’ve already been through that and it hasn’t been pleasant…until now.

Thus, if I’m the Browns, I hang on to Sanders simply as a backup. Also, it’s not as if Watson has proven to stay healthy throughout an entire season anyway. With that in mind, there may be a time when this glory run eventually ends because of an injury. That’s another reason why backups exist, right?

Let’s be clear in the sense that I’m not saying Watson should be the backup (like I wanted) because it’s pretty clear, again, so far, that this was the right decision for the team. They overcame the hatred against the decision to start the year; and winning really does cure all.

The funniest part is that if Sanders doesn’t play another snap this season, he can brag that he completed 100% of his passes for this season (one total HAHA).
