CST Mailbag 3/17/19

Hope you all had a safe and enjoyable St. Patrick’s Day. As always, we took the best questions that were submitted this week to answer. If you are interested in sending in a question make sure to check out our Twitter, @CLEsportsTalk on Thursday evenings. Now, let’s have a look at this week’s questions!

I definitely do not think they will do it before the season starts, unless GM John Dorsey is blown away by an offer. If the Browns are looking to move on from Duke Johnson, I’d expect it to be during the season when RB Kareem Hunt’s return would be on the horizon.

One thing to consider is that last season, when Freddie Kitchens was calling plays, the Browns had some sets with three running backs, Nick Chubb, Duke Johnson and Dontrell Hilliard, all on the field at the same time. Why not do the same with Kareem Hunt in there instead of Hilliard? That would be a scary backfield!

The best aspect about how the Browns are currently built is that in the draft they have many options. There is no specific position where you say, “Wow, we need that!” Three players that I’d be very happy with are DT Jeffrey Simmons, S Taylor Rapp or LB Mack Wilson. Simmons is a Top 10 talent but due to an injury and an off the field incident in high school his draft stock has decreased. The Browns might have to trade up to guarantee to get him, but he might be a good fit. Rapp and Wilson are more likely to be there when the Browns draft in the 2nd round and would fit areas of need.

I’m generally very optimistic and with the recent moves there’s even more of a reason to feel that way. My biggest concern right now is the depth of the team. As an example, last year both CBs Denzel Ward and Terrance Mitchell dealt with injuries. If either or both get hurt this year, who is stepping into that spot? There are cornerbacks still available in free agency that can be helpful members of the Browns in 2019.

Also, the loss of Jabrill Peppers puts Derrick Kindred at safety. I am not totally confident in Kindred as a starter for a playoff hopeful team. He definitely can have a role, but starting the entire season should not be it.

There has been some noise about Eric Berry who was recently released by the Chiefs. I would be happy with signing Berry but if the Browns do not feel he is healthy enough to sign then the draft is going to be their best option. Safeties Taylor Rapp from Washington or Amani Hooker from Iowa would be two players to look at. As mentioned above, the Browns still have Derrick Kindred, but I am not confident enough with him as the starter.

I hope you all enjoyed this week’s mailbag. I cannot wait to see next week’s questions!
