For those that haven’t or didn’t realize it…
Before Lebron and the 2016 Cleveland Cavs brought home the NBA title, Cleveland was a title town. Yes, folks, you read that right. From 1994-1999, Cleveland was home to three championship teams. Those teams were the Cleveland Crunch of the NPSL. A professional indoor soccer league that ran from 1984 – 2001. In that time, the crunch won three league titles (1994, 1996, 1999).
Fast forward to 2021 where the Crunch have made their return and boy did they show out! Despite only having four practices and holding a few tryouts, the Crunch showed up to the SoccerPlex in North Olmstead, Ohio, and made a statement. That statement you ask? LeBron may not be the only one to bring another title back to Cleveland.
I’ll save you the drama on this one. In sports, the term massacre doesn’t get used often, but in this case, it was needed. The Crunch were out for blood from the first whistle. An offense was displayed that this reporter hadn’t seen since Crunch legend Hector Marinaro was on the field with those fantastic Crunch teams of the ’90s.
This new Crunch team showed that they are here, and here to win. Goals by Derezic (hat trick), Spragling (two), Mutemwa(two), Jordan(two), Beck, Blackwood, and Suljevic would result in a 12-4 shed whoopin’ against the visiting Brew City Legends.
Yes, This was an “exhibition” game, but if you are a true soccer fan you have to appreciate the fact that soccer is back in Cleveland and under the Crunch banner!
This soccer fan will be following all season. GO CRUNCH!
