The most sought after cornerback Darrelle Revis is returning home to New York on a five year deal worth $70 million. The Cleveland Browns were interested in the best corner in the league, but unfortunately lost the sweepstakes. This marks the second player that spurned Cleveland for the Jets. Buster Skrine agreed to a four year, $25 million deal with $13 million guaranteed. Although the team missed out on some free agents, it’s good to see the Browns reaching out and trying.

Even though Cleveland isn’t expected to be big players in free agency, it’s not stopping them from doing their research. They are reportedly interested in Brandon Browner and have a meeting scheduled with Perrish Cox.

So far, Browner has scheduled meetings with the Washington Redskins and the New Orleans Saints. Baltimore and Jacksonville are also interested in the cornerback. Last year he started nine games for New England and recorded 26 tackles, seven pass breakups and an interception. Browner is a towering defensive back (6’4”) who contributed to the Patriots championship run. Despite the talent, the five year veteran comes with red flags as he served a four game suspension under the NFL’s substance abuse policy.

On the other hand, Perrish Cox could be the smartest option. The 2010 fifth round draft pick started nine games for the Broncos registering 58 tackles and 14 defended passes. After a surprising release, the cornerback spent the next two seasons playing for San Francisco, including a brief stint with the Seattle Seahawks before returning to the 49ers. Last year was his best season when he recorded 53 tackles while setting career highs with five interceptions and 18 passes broken up. Cox was tied fourth in the league with Buster Skrine in defended passes. Sounds like the perfect replacement.

Ultimately, if the Cleveland Browns don’t acquire a veteran back that means they’re going all in on former first round pick, Justin Gilbert. Additionally, K’Waun Williams and Pierre Desir will accept more responsibility. The Browns might be banking on the development of these young cornerbacks into quite the complimentary pieces to Joe Haden.
