It’s official! The final College Football Playoff rankings are in and your Ohio State Buckeyes rank second in the country only behind LSU. Buckeyes won the Big 10 Championship against the Wisconsin Badgers on December 7, 2019, with a large second-half comeback scoring 27 unanswered points to win, 34 – 21. The Buckeyes have been one of the best teams in college football this season and this playoff looks to be one of the most highly-contested playoffs that we have seen.
The number one ranked team is LSU and rightfully so. LSU had one of the best seasons of any school this season. In Week 6 of the season, the Gators came to LSU and were decimated with a score of 42 – 28. Their biggest win in the heart of the season was against the Alabama Crimson Tide, defeating them 46 – 41, which was the start of a downhill season for the Crimson Tide. LSU would go on to be the dominant team in the SEC all season, capping it off by beating number four Georgia, 37-7, in the SEC Championship.
Your Ohio State Buckeyes come in at number two. The Buckeyes are one of the best teams in college football and have shown that time and time again this season under first-year head coach Ryan Day. They have been an unstoppable team on both offense and defense all season, which is even more evident by the fact that both quarterback Justin Fields and defensive end Chase Young both being nominated for the Heisman this season.
The defending National Champions, the Clemson Tigers, come in at number three. A team that was thought to be a juggernaut at the beginning of the season, got hot at the right time of the season to contend for back-to-back championships. Clemson did not have a monster schedule for the season but was looked at as a strong contender for the national title all season and picked the right time to go into fifth-gear. Ohio State will have a tough team to go up against in the Fiesta Bowl, whoever wins deserves the win, and will almost certainly be the top choice to be the 2019 National Champions.
The fourth and final contender for the National Championship is the Oklahoma Sooners. Jim Ross’ favorite team has been formidable all year. The only one-loss team to make it into the playoff was in a make-or-break game against Baylor in the Big 12 Championship game. Winning the game in overtime along with a Georgia loss cemented the Sooners’ spot in the playoff. While they are the long-shots to win the National Championship, if there is anything that sports fan knows is to never say never, it may just come true.
In my opinion, there are two major contenders for the national championship and those teams are LSU and Ohio State. I’m not a betting man, but if I had to put money down on a team, I’d put it on Ohio State. LSU has an amazing offense, but their defense does not match up in comparison to the Ohio State defense.
Like it’s always been said, “Defense wins championships.”
