The Cleveland Cavaliers last game was a dominant victory over the Orlando Magic 126-99. They currently have a win streak of 8 games and have won 8 of their last 10 games despite enduring injuries. The Cavs are now 26-15 and at the halfway point of the 2023 / 2024 season. NBA pundits are starting to take notice of this team. And Cleveland sports fans are seeing similarities with the 2023 Cleveland Browns.
It is no secret that the 2023 Cleveland Browns season was magical despite all the injuries sustained by the team. They had 26% of their salary cap on the injured reserved list and still won 11 games and clinched an AFC Wildcard Playoff 5th seed. The Browns season did end with a disappointing loss to the Houston Texans in the wildcard round. However, Browns fans feel optimistic as to what this team can accomplish when healthy. The Cleveland Cavaliers have had their fair share of injuries as well.
The Cavaliers have been missing G Darius Garland (jaw) since December 15th and PF Evan Mobley (knee) since December 7th. In their last game, they were without SG Caris LeVert (wrist) and SG Ty Jerome (ankle). And yet this team is finding a way to win consistently. They will have to find other ways to win with a 25-game suspension of PF Tristan Thompson for violating the NBA drug policy. Things are about to get tougher for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Their next two games are against the first-place Milwaukee Bucks (30-13) in Milwaukee. The last time the Cavs played the Bucks. The Cavs blew out Milwaukee in Cleveland by a score of 135-95. That night the Bucks were missing their star player C Giannis Antetokounmpo. He is expected to play in the next two games against the Cavs. The question remains for the Cavaliers of how successful this team can be for the rest of the season.
Last year the Cavs made it to the NBA playoffs for the first time without Lebron James since 1998. They too had a disappointing first-round exit in playoffs by the New York Knicks. They very easily could have rested on their laurels and felt that the success was good enough. But they didn’t do that. They made moves acquiring G Max Strus and developed players like G Georges Niang and SG Sam Merrill. It also appears that the Browns are making moves to improve.
After the season ended for the Browns, they started to make changes to the offensive coaching staff. With NFL free agency and the Draft coming upon us, they will also make moves to upgrade players where it is needed. Many Cleveland sports fans are starting to believe in both the Cavaliers and the Browns. Skeptics and pessimists may caution fans to not get their hopes too high. I say to all Cleveland sports fans when your team is competing and tangibly working to improve, enjoy it because nothing lasts forever!
