Cavaliers Waive Center Edy Tavares

The Cavaliers have officially waived 7’3″ center, Edy Tavares. The addition of Ante Zizic in the Kyrie trade left Tavares on the bubble of making a roster spot. The Toronto Raptors own his G-League rights, so he is unavailable to sign directly with the Cavs affiliate, the Canton Charge. However, Tavares is still eligible to sign to one of the Cavs’ two-way contracts. The Cavs already used one of their two-way contracts on John Holland last month, so if they were to sign Tavares, it would be into their last remaining spot.

I always liked the potential Tavares had shown in the D-League, but on this loaded Cavs roster having a young prospect like him may not have been the best fit. His spot would be better filled by a role player who can help the team win now rather than in the future. Plus, they have a similar player already in Ante Zizic. While Zizic may not be as tall as Tavares, he’s five years younger and still has more professional basketball experience from playing overseas.

I’d be open to the team signing Tavares to the remaining two-way contract, but they will probably decide to go in a different direction than signing another center. If he doesn’t sign with the Cavs, I hope he does end up on another team. Edy has a great story and I’d hate for this to be the end of it.
