Buckeyes Players to Watch: National Championship

The Ohio State defense has struggled at times this year, but their defensive line has been one of the top units in the entire country. The leader of that unit, Haskel Garrett, will need to play as great as he has all season to limit Alabama’s offensive production. Garrett will predominately be going up against Alabama C Chris Owens. Owens is filling in for starter Landon Dickerson due to injury. Owens still has the experience and is a talented lineman, even though he is no Landon Dickerson. Owens is a more skilled run-blocker than a pass-blocker, so due to this matchup, Alabama might elect to try to run Najee Harris more. Garrett and the rest of the defense just held Clemson’s Travis Etienne to only 32 rushing yards. If they hold Harris to similar production, Garrett could be in for an incredible night. He will have a hay-day against Owens if Alabama passes the ball often. Mac Jones has been an incredible quarterback this year, which is why he was a Heisman finalist. One of his few weaknesses, however, has been moving around in the pocket, so Haskins will have the opportunity for some key sacks in this one. If Garrett can limit Harris, Ohio State will have a lot of chances to get off the field on third down.
