Last Sunday the Cleveland Browns traveled to Seattle and tried to extend their two-game winning streak against the Seahawks. Franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson was listed as out for the game with his nagging throwing shoulder injury. PJ Walker got the start at quarterback. Seattle, Washington is a difficult place to win a football game. The last time the Browns won in Seattle was 1989. Seattle is tied for first place in the NFC West and the Browns have found ways to win games.

The Browns won their last two games by two points or less. Defense and special teams have been excellent in both wins. The Browns offense made enough plays at the end of both games to put the team in a position to win the games. In the last two consecutive weeks Browns defensive end Myles Garrett earned AFC Defensive Player of the Week and Browns place kicker Dustin Hopkins earned AFC Special Teams Player of the Week. The Browns Defense and special teams have taken up the slack for the Browns offense.

The Browns went into this game with a record of 4-2 despite injuries to both all-pro running back Nick Chubb and franchise quarterback Deshaun Watson. Criticism of a coach and front office can be fair, but under these circumstances for the 2023 Cleveland Browns, the front office and the coaching staff have done an exceptional job with this team. With the Browns’ injury situation, the 4-2 record showed the strength of the roster. It also shows the coaching staff getting the very best out of the roster. The question going into the game was will this continue in Seattle?

It did not continue into this game. Seattle started fast in the game and jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Browns did a good job of fighting back to a halftime score trailing 17-14. In 28 minutes of the second half, the Browns outplayed the Seahawks and tried to hold on to a 20-17 lead late in the 4th quarter. A costly turnover just prior to the two-minute warning and a defensive letdown led to a final score in Seattle’s favor of 24-20. It was disappointing, but it wasn’t heartbreaking. It also wasn’t season-breaking either.

The Browns now sit at 4-3 for the season. They host the one-win Arizona Cardinals next week. This will be an opportunity to get back into the win column with or without their franchise quarterback. If this team does not take this opportunity, they will fall to 4-4 for the season. The following divisional games would be considered must-win games.

I knew trying to win in Seattle would be tough. And getting out of a potential mid-season hole would be tougher. If this team is expected to make the playoffs, they need to take care of business and win next week. That is what good teams do, especially playoff teams.
