Browns “Future QB Coach” Exploiting NFL Rules Loophole

Future Browns QB coach Kevin O’Connell has the upper hand on the NFL when it comes to Marcus Mariota. He’s Mariota’s trainer for all of his pre-Combine workouts.

So what does that mean for the Browns? It means O’Connell, who is reportedly joining the Browns after the NFL draft, can teach Marcus the entire Browns offense, months before the draft.

And it is completely legal.

Because O’Connell is not officially hired, he and the Browns will not be penalized by the NFL for illegal contact with a prospect before the NFL Combine.

Why is this a big deal? Because, by all accounts, Browns GM Ray Farmer is “enamored” with the Oregon QB, and multiple reports have stated that Farmer is willing to trade up and get the Heisman Trophy-winning former Oregon Duck.

But, that leaves no guarantees for Mariota to be picked by the Browns. Cleveland has the 12th and 19th picks in the draft, while Mariota is an almost sure top five first round pick. Even so, the Washington Redskins could be a potential partner at pick five. Also, it has yet to be seen what the Browns are going to do with current quarterbacks Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer.

While this only adds to the cloudy Browns QB situation, O’Connell’s connection to Mariota only makes the situation that much more interesting. So what do you think? Will it the Browns go with Hoyer, Manziel, draft Mariota or do something else? Tell us your opinions below!
