Browns Backup Watson and Pickup Corner in 5th Round

The Browns had two selections in the 5th round. With pick 140, the team selected quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson out of UCLA. At pick 142, the Dawgs went with cornerback Cameron Mitchell out of Northwestern. Clearly, looking for a quarterback to play behind Watson for many years to come. Additionally helping to cornerback depth, too!

Strengths For DTR

  • Explosive, high-energy athlete with elite creation capacity
  • Above-average arm strength and velocity in the short and intermediate ranges
  • Has the arm elasticity to adjust throwing angles and generate velocity off-platform
  • Able to progress through reads quickly and work back infield
  • Flashes good pressure detection, navigation, and escapability in the pocket
  • Has a degree of natural accuracy; can lead receivers in stride with velocity
  • Provides glimpses of quality anticipation over the middle of the field
  • Steely competitor with great toughness

Areas For Improvement For DTR

  • Arm strength isn’t elite, limiting velocity generation downfield
  • Decision-making is very inconsistent, inviting turnover risk
  • Footwork can be staggered, uncontrolled, and frantic at times
  • Sometimes lacks the field vision to anticipate breaks and ID defenders
  • Concave, overhead release sometimes detracts from rotation
  • Occasionally lacks situational precision on contested throws
  • Can rely on creation capacity to a fault and invite chaos
  • Has a lighter, leaner frame

Strengths For Mitchell:

Talented cornerback with excellent size. Quick flipping his hips in transition, displays good footwork in reverse, and works to get his head back around to locate the pass in the air. Displays a sense of timing, tracks the ball, and has a burst to the action. Instinctive, shows good recognition, and gives effort against the run. Works very hard and stays with coverage assignments.

Weaknesses For Mitchell: Must be more consistent with his footwork. Struggles staying with receivers out of routes.
