The Cleveland Browns and their wait to revenge their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs back in January begins Sunday at 4:25 pm. If you are a Browns fan you are probably climbing the walls and pulling your hair out in anticipation of the big game. There are many parts to a game of this early season magnitude. Here are a few topics that have me ready to do battle with the Chiefs Sunday!
1st Down “The Mayfield Effect”
Baker Mayfield is that lightning rod of the Browns. He doesn’t have to do too much but when he’s on his game he’s the best in the NFL. Sunday. When he lines up against the Kansas City Chiefs, it’ll be round two of this new rivalry and I expect Mayfield to play well.
I think it’s very important that the Browns don’t fall too far behind in this game. An early lead would be significant. Mayfield seems poised and ready to have a historic season. His numbers have been good for his first three seasons. He’s cut back on the interceptions. He had a game last season against the Cincinnati Bengals where he completed 22 passes in a row. So the idea that Mayfield can’t lead this team to the Super Bowl is a serious mistake.
Mayfield had a good game last January when the Browns lost to the Chiefs in the playoff game. He finished going 23 for 37 including one touchdown. A late-game series stalled and the Browns defense couldn’t get that final stop.
In this game Sunday, I don’t believe he needs to launch the ball 37 times like in the playoff game. If he can keep his throws below 30 on the day, the Browns’ opportunities to victory grow because they’ve used their running game more.
I’ll be surprised if Mayfield doesn’t have a great game Sunday. He has done well in games where there were doubters, and there were many of those a year ago and Mayfield continued to produce, and the Browns got to the playoffs and an 11-5 season record.
