2nd down: The backup quarterback competition
Case Keenum, the veteran quarterback who traveled with Browns coach Kevin Stefanski from the Minnesota Vikings to the Browns last year is and has been the backup quarterback to Baker Mayfield. However, the other guy, quarterback practice squad journeyman Kyle Lauletta, emerged after last week’s win down at Jacksonville as a possible replacement to Keenum.
Lauletta passed for over 200 yards and threw two nice touchdown throws a week ago and many fans are starting to question who’d be better at that backup role?
Of note too is the substantial cap in salary between the two players. Keenum is 33 years old and is due over $7 million while Lauletta is 26 years old and is due $780,000. Money talks and maybe the Browns would be wise to consider this position on the team to be one where they could potentially save some dollars especially knowing they’ll have to pay a pretty penny for Mayfield and his extension in the near future.
