Pre-season games, joint practices, whenever and whatever, if the Browns are playing, I’m watching. Saturday night’s game will feature Jacoby Brissett as the starter. I know if he isn’t spectacular, Browns fans will say Dobbs should be starting. Not. Going. To Happen. While Josh Dobbs has surprised people, including me, he’s a backup. Who Am I watching this week?
Offense. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett, running back Jerome Ford, the offensive line (especially Michael Dunn at center), wide receivers Anthony Schwartz, David Bell, Daylen Baldwin and Mike Harley. I want to watch Brissett’s timing and decision-making. Ford, if he plays, has made a hell of an impact. The running back room is going to be impressive. As for the offensive line, this is where the versatility of players makes their mark. I fully expect Dunn to be the starting center in game one. The wide receiver room is just the opposite of the running back room, question mark after question mark. It’s time for Schwartz to step up and show he can be more of a running threat. Bell needs the repetitions with Brissett. Baldwin and Harley are playing for a roster spot or a practice squad spot.
Defense. Repeat after me, the Browns need help at defensive tackle. Jordan Elliott and Taven Bryan are the starters. Perrion Winfrey will make the roster because he’s a current draft pick but needs to show he can be a force. Tommy Togiai is playing for his life right now. Glen Logan could replace him on the roster with another solid game.
I’m looking forward to watching the further development of defensive ends Isaac Rochell, Alex Wright and Isaiah Thomas. Against the Eagles, linebackers Tony Fields, Jordan Kunaszyk and safety Richard LeCounte played well, I hope to see further development. As always, I’m watching kicker Cade York.
This game has no impact on anything except the bottom of the roster. Backups will be determined on the offensive line, defensive line, wide receiver and safety. The decisions on trades involving the wide receiver, running back and defensive tackle rooms could also be determined.
The final 53-man roster needs to be set by 4:00 pm eastern on August 30 and I trust GM Andrew Berry to get the job done.
