On October 31, the Cavs and center Anderson Varejao agreed on a contract extension. It’s a two year, 20 million dollar guaranteed deal with a 10 million dollar team option for the third year.

Cavs GM David Griffin on the extension:

“Anderson represents how this franchise wants to approach the game of basketball, both on the court and off. He has been a key part of our foundation for years and we are very happy that he will continue to be part of our Cavs family as we work towards our goals at the highest level. Andy is, and has been, a tireless worker, an incredible teammate and a great competitor that plays with a rare combination of energy and intensity that makes him truly special.”

In his 11 years, all with the Cavaliers, Varejao has averaged 7.8 points per game and 7.8 rebounds per game. However, in his last five years those numbers have gone up to 10.5 points per game and 10 rebounds a game.

Varejao is truly a double-double machine.

Additionally, Anderson represents the loyalty that this city needs and deserves. His character on and off of the basketball court is second to none. He is always active on the floor, and wins the majority of those crucial 50/50 loose balls that end up deciding games. Also, Varejao was a big reason Cavaliers star LeBron James decided to return to Cleveland, as he was one of the King’s favorite teammates.

Anderson’s biggest criticism is being able to stay healthy for an entire season. In 10 full seasons played, he’s averaged 53.4 games per year, including recent seasons of just 25, 25, and 31 games played respectively. If the Brazilian is able to stay healthy, he will be able to make a huge impact in the coming years especially during the playoffs where it takes true grit and guts to win big ballgames.

It’s wonderful to see that Anderson Varejao will be sticking around for a few more years in a quest to win that allusive first NBA Championship for this city of Cleveland.

Anderson Varejao, loyalty in his veins.
