All-Star, 3-Point Champion Malik Billingsley Plays Last Minor League Basketball Game with Akron Aviators
(Akron, OH) – March 1, 2022 – Multi-year, award-winning ABA All-Star Malik Billingsley is retiring after playing 4 seasons with northeast Ohio minor league basketball team, the Akron Aviators. Saturday, March 6, 2022 will be his last game as an Aviator as the team takes on the Midwest Falcons of Dekalb, IL at the Mason Community Learning Center in Akron. Billingsley has missed part of this season due to a new position as Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach at Penn State-Shenango and is moving on to a coaching, administrative role.
A graduate of Twinsburg High School and Muskingum University, Billingsley joined the Akron Aviators in their first season in 2017-2018. As a player, he has traveled across the United States, as the team played in Chicago, Syracuse NY, and even to Honolulu, HI when the team took a trip to play in the Blaisdell Arena in a locally televised game their first season. Billingsley was the reigning American Basketball Association 3-point champion and skills challenge champion from 2019 – 2021. He even proposed to his now wife at half-time of a game 2 seasons ago.
“He really is a staple for this team as a not only a player but a major recruiter for new guys,” says Brian “Essince” Collins. co-founder/co-owner of the team. “He has been so loyal to this team and it’s amazing to see his growth. He used to travel over 3 hours round trip to come to practices his first season and we watched him develop into a leader and ambassador. From the accolades, leadership, and impact on the court. He will be missed but we’re excited for this next chapter in his career.”
