The Cleveland Browns made a power move this past weekend. The Browns traded their 2022 fifth and six-round picks to Dallas for wide receiver Amari Cooper and a 2022 six-round pick. Amari Cooper, 27 years old, did not live up to expectations last season. Cooper had 68 receptions, 865 receiving yards, and 8 touchdowns. The Cowboys decided to part ways with Cooper as the move saved them 16 million dollars in cap space. Amari Cooper is an extremely talented wide receiver who has amassed 7,076 receiving yards before his 28th birthday. He also has been voted to four pro bowls and has 46 career touchdowns. The Browns are on the hook for the remaining 60 million dollars and have Cooper for three years until he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
This move gave the Browns the flexibility to release veteran wide receiver Jarvis Landry, which they did today as the team saved 14.879 million dollars. The Browns permitted Landry to find a trade partner. They also considered restructuring his contract to keep him, but they figured it was best to cut ties. It makes sense since Landry underperformed this season, as he finished his 2021 season with 52 receptions, 570 receiving yards, and 2 touchdowns. Landry has also been unable to stay on the field as he dealt with a plethora of injuries at 29 years of age. There is still more to be done to make this team a contender. Baker Mayfield no longer has an excuse as he has a clear number one receiver in Amari Cooper, who makes highlight-reel plays and has blinding speed.
