A Tie-Breaker Change That Could Be…Awesome
I am biased. I want the Cleveland Guardians to make the playoffs by winning the AL Central Division. I know. Shocking here in Cleveland Sports Talk.
While I am writing this on 9/24/26, this is where we are at in said AL Central with four games to go….

In 13 games this season together, the White Sox have a 7-6 record over the Guardians. Thus, this would mean that if the teams finish the season with the same record, it would be the White Sox who get the division over the Guardians because of the head-to-head record.
And that is completely reasonable.
But I have an idea and keep in mind this is written before the end of the year and the White Sox hypothetically take the Division (which, positively, Zach says they won’t!) Let’s do it this way…
One game. The tied team with the best record gets the home-field advantage and the clubs play a single game to decide who wins the division. The hype for if this happened would be huge, not just for the two teams’ fan bases, but the entire league is watching
My thinking is just in an early April or May series, what MLB matchup has players thinking about a potential tiebreaker that early in the season? It’s more so, “hey, let’s not suck so we can have a chance to make the playoffs.”
I find this idea enticing because watching my Guardians in one single game that matters so much is close to a Game 7, albeit less of a war and more of a battle.
Also, for the league itself, as mentioned already benefits due to the amount of hype that would be brought into a single baseball game that matters so much more than rolling your eyes and saying, “That damn tiebreaker, ugh.”
This idea and justification for it does not excuse the team that loses a spot because of a tiebreaker record with a division foe. Because each game’s goal is obviously winning and that is the one thing one team did better than the other and it makes it their right to the playoffs very fair.
I’m already getting tingly just thinking of the idea of a Guardians’ division win with one single game to make it happen. Lastly, keep in mind the losing team would still be able to qualify via the Wild Card if the overall record allows them to…
